Hi! Sorry to bother you but I was wondering about something translation-related in the newest chapter. When we got that glimpse of Sangwoo’s thoughts and he was freaking out Bum will write something stupid he calls him “dummy” (in his mind) and it seemed to me oddly delicate way of calling someone dumb. Like, he could use the word “idiot” or “retard” as he did before. Was it harsher in the original version? (I Just want to believe that there is itsy bit of fondness while he’s faking it all…)

Sangwoo calls Bum “jo mongchongiga, or “that idiot.” It’s not a particularly vulgar or vicious thing to say. You might call a close friend that. For all you weeaboos out there, it’s on the same level as calling someone “baka.”

Actually I think it’s “mongchong-i,” or the diminutive form of “mongchong.” Which would explain why they used “dummy.” It kind of sounds similar. So yeah, he’s insulting him in an affectionate way.

Forgive the screenshot from my phone, I’m lying in bed and suddenly got curious.

My Korean is nonexistent and I can only even read a handful of the Hangul characters, but I own the first season in Korean from back when the English translation wasn’t simultaneously released, so I opened this up to try and check this panel for myself.

Anyway, uh, that said, does Sangwoo seriously refer to him as Bummi-hyung in this panel??!!

This segment is interesting, because he refers to Bum as Bummie-hyung when he’s talking to Jieun, but when he’s talking to Bum he just calls him Bum-ah. It’s like he can only flatter Bum while he’s degrading someone else.
